Some time ago,
I listened to a commencement speech
given at the University of Tokyo in 2019.

The words were spoken by sociologist Chizuko Ueno.

One sentence has stayed with me,
quietly.

Use your knowledge
not to step on those who are vulnerable,
but to protect them.

When I heard it,
something inside my chest
softly aligned.

As if the thought
had always been there—
waiting to be named.

Being where I am now
is not simply “natural.”

There have been supports
I received without even noticing—
hands that steadied me,
paths cleared before I arrived.
Nothing about this
is entirely mine alone.

And because of that,
what I hold—
my knowledge, my voice, my choices—
is not meant for standing above someone else.
If anything,
I hope it can warm the ground
beneath another’s feet.

More than showing strength,
I want to choose kindness.

To live with the quiet understanding
that nothing is simply given.
That is something
I do not want to forget.
