Some time ago,
I listened to a commencement speech
given at the University of Tokyo in 2019.

少し前に、
2019年の東京大学の入学式で語られた祝辞を聞いた。

The words were spoken by sociologist Chizuko Ueno.

社会学者の上野千鶴子さんの言葉だった。

One sentence has stayed with me,
quietly.

その中の一文が、
静かに心に残っている。

Use your knowledge
not to step on those who are vulnerable,
but to protect them.

その知識を、
弱い立場の人を踏みつけるためではなく、
守るために使ってほしい。

When I heard it,
something inside my chest
softly aligned.

胸の奥で、
そっと何かが重なった。

As if the thought
had always been there—
waiting to be named.

わたしがずっと大切にしたいと思ってきたことは、
きっと、こういうことだったのだと思う。

Being where I am now
is not simply “natural.”

今ここにいることは、
決して当たり前じゃない。

There have been supports
I received without even noticing—
hands that steadied me,
paths cleared before I arrived.
Nothing about this
is entirely mine alone.

気づかないまま受け取ってきた支えが、
たくさんある。

And because of that,
what I hold—
my knowledge, my voice, my choices—
is not meant for standing above someone else.
If anything,
I hope it can warm the ground
beneath another’s feet.

だからこそ、
持っているものを、
誰かより上に立つためではなく、
誰かの足元を少しあたたかくするために
使えたらいい。

More than showing strength,
I want to choose kindness.

強さを見せるよりも、
やさしさを選べる人でいたい。

To live with the quiet understanding
that nothing is simply given.
That is something
I do not want to forget.

当たり前じゃない、という前提で生きること。
それを、忘れずにいたい。
