Every now and then,
someone makes you remember
the person you still hope to be.

That's what happened
when I began learning more about Fujii Kaze.
At first, I was simply curious.
I knew the songs.
I knew the voice.

What I didn't expect
was to recognize something of myself
in the things he seems to hold dear.

Not ambition.
Not being better than the person beside you.
Something quieter.

Love without possession.
Forgiveness without pretending nothing hurt.
The courage to let go.

The kind of freedom
that doesn't need to take freedom away from anyone else.

I think I've been searching for these things
for much longer than I realized.

Not because I have mastered them.
Quite the opposite.

I know what it is
to replay an old hurt.
To compare.
To want things to go my way.

To care about someone so much
that care slowly turns into worry,
and worry into something heavier.

So perhaps we are not always drawn
to the things we already are.

Sometimes we are drawn
to the things we are still learning
how to become.

And lately,
I keep thinking about open hands.

A closed hand can protect.
It can hold something precious.
But it cannot receive.
And it cannot let anything go.

Maybe I don't want to move through life
with my hands closed.

Maybe I want to love deeply
without making love a cage.
To forgive without erasing myself.
To care without controlling.

To want things,
without needing to own the outcome.
To meet another person's light
without wondering if mine shines brightly enough.

I won't always know how.
I'll hold on when I meant to let go.
I'll compare.
I'll worry.
I'll get it wrong.

But perhaps a life doesn't change
because we finally become good
at all the things we believe in.

Perhaps it changes
because we keep returning to them.

Love.
Freedom.
Grace.
Open hands.

Maybe that was what I recognized.
Not someone else's way of living.
Just a quiet reminder
of the way I want to live mine.
