Some reunions don't feel
like reunions at all.
You simply find yourself
back in a place
you never really left.

My daughter's friend came from Kumamoto.
They've known each other
since they were two—
since their world was still
small enough to hold in tiny hands.

And there they were.
No awkward beginning.
No distance to cross.
Just the two of them,
as though the years between
had quietly slipped away.

They talked when they wanted to,
laughed when something was funny,
and wandered off into their own time.
Nothing needed filling.

No one tried
to make the days memorable.
And perhaps because of that,
they quietly became so.

Days before they came,
the earth had shaken again in Kumamoto,
bringing old memories back with it.
But here they were,
talking and laughing.
And somewhere in those ordinary hours,
the worry inside me
grew quiet too.

The little girls they once were
have grown.
Almost without us noticing.

Different places.
Different days.
Different lives unfolding.

And still,
when they are together,
something feels untouched by time.

There was no grand moment
to remember.
Just ordinary hours,
softly passing,
with people who didn't need
to be anything but themselves.

Maybe some of the loveliest moments
are the ones
that ask nothing of us.
They simply let us be.
